A Bit of Science

Dry Rot

We use a dual purpose (fungicide/insecticide) treatment by Wykamol based on microemulsion technology which produces a formulation with a particle size in the nanometre range. This tiny particle size allows the formulation to penetrate deep into the timber in order to deliver the active ingredient (a combination of insecticide & fungicide) to prevent or eradicate insect attack and to prevent fungal decay and staining. It is effective against a wide range of wood rotting fungi [both wet rot and dry rot] whilst the pyrethroid insecticide is effective against all life stages of wood boring insects. It has virtually no odour and can be applied either by brush or low pressure spray to provide long lasting protection. The formulation is water-based producing a non-flammable, quick drying product containing no volatile organic compounds(VOCs). The concentrated product is diluted with water.

Wet Rot

Wet Rot is basically a fungal growth which in turn is part of a family of fungi called Coniophoraceae. The most common form of this in Ireland is Coniophora Puteana. It spreads through the saturated timbers. Fortunately it does not spread through walls like dry rot, although the area where wet rot is located may have very wet walls due to moisture penetration. This can be remedied by drying out and in some cases rebuilding the walls. The level of work required is dependant on the level of wet rot present. In most cases wet rot treatment is simple and involves the removal and replacement of affected timbers after preventing moisture ingression.

The science behind the removal and replacement of soaking wet timbers is simple. Replace them and make sure they stay dry and you will never have wet rot. There is no need to use any chemicals for the treatment of Wet Rot. This will save you money and avoid the use of unnecessary treatments. An important point in all of these works is to encourage the homeowner to adopt an approach to the conservation of the building and the environment from an eco-friendly point of view. This is beneficial to both you and the environment. Make the house breathable but also warm and this will help avoid many types of damp.

Wood worm

To eradicate this problem we use an insecticide treatment from Wykamol based on microemulsion technology which produces a formulation with a particle size in the nanometre range. This tiny particle size allows the formulation to penetrate deep into the timber in order to deliver the active ingredient (insecticide) to prevent or eradicate wood boring insect attack. It is effective against all life stages of wood boring insects. It has virtually no odour and can be applied either by brush or low pressures spray to provide long lasting protection.
